Kamehachi means “eight
turtles” in Japanese.
The turtle and the number eight both symbolize
long life and good luck in Japan.
Kamehachi of Tokyo was originally
founded in Chicago in 1967 by
Mrs. Marion Konishi, and is widely recognized
as the first sushi bar in the city. Kamehachi
came to the States from Japan through distant
relatives who once owned restaurants in New York
City. Then, under Mrs. Konishi’s direction,
Kamehachi settled into its famous Old Town spot
across from Second City, where many locals and
celebrities had their first sushi experiences.
Kamehachi moved two blocks south in 1994 to a
new location, and added
another restaurant in Northbrook in 1999, in Streeterville
in 2002, where it has remained family-owned for
three generations.
In keeping with our family’s
tradition, we remain dedicated to the same quality
and reputation that has made us a favorite Chicagoland
dining spot for more than 35 years.
We invite you to experience the unique flavors,
textures and artistry of the Japanese cuisine
– whether you’re an expert or a beginner.
We want to continue providing a great Japanese
dining experience for many more generations to
come.
Welcome and enjoy the
Kamehachi tradition. |
